Wilderness Basic Life Support (WBLS)
WBLS courses are designed for people who those who spend time in areas where outside help will be available in around an hour.
We'll cover the skills to assess and treat life-threatening injuries and illnesses until more advanced help arrives.
Wilderness First Aid
(WFA)
WFA courses are designed for those who spend time on full day excursions where outside medical assistance will be available in a few hours.
WFA courses are a great intro to wilderness medicine and prepare participants to assess, treat, and evacuate common injuries and illnesses that occur in a wilderness setting.
Many WFA graduates return to take more advanced courses to continue to improve their wilderness medical skills.
Wilderness Advanced First Aid (WAFA)
WAFA courses are designed for those who are out up to a few days where outside medical help may be take several hours to arrive.
WAFA courses cover more topics and go deeper into anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology than a WFA.
Many WAFA graduates return to take more advanced classes to get more hands-on practice and experience.
Wilderness First Responder (WFR)
WAFA courses are designed for those who multi-day trips or who are involved in high-risk activities (rock climbing, whitewater paddling, mountaineering, etc.)
WFR courses train participants to deal with injuries and illnesses in remote locations, challenging weather, limited equipment, and little access to outside medical assistance.
Graduates are prepared to care for patients for extended periods of time and make critical decisions about evacuation and treatment.
All WFA, WAFA, and WFR courses exceed WMEC certification standards and are endorsed by WMS.
WBLS courses meet Occupational and Safety Health Association (OSHA) and National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA) standards.
Our courses often meet CPR and First Aid requirements for coaches, camp staff, or guides. Please check with your organization and/or state guidelines to confirm and reach out if there are any questions we can help answer.
All of our courses are taught in the context of wilderness settings - we'll assume that advanced medical care is an hour or more away. Our training will go beyond urban first aid courses so that you will learn how to stabilize and/or transport patients until you can hand them over to more definitive care.
All WMTC courses have an in-person component - we strongly believe in the important of hands-on experiences during you training that takes place during skill labs and simulations. We do offer standard (all in-person) and hybrid versions of most courses (not offered for WBLS).
